Commercial-Free Schools
What you can do: Schools
- Join the Campaign for Commercial-Free Education and defend the educational mission of Irish schools.
- Take a “Commercialism Tour” to see how many voucher schemes operate during the year, how many sponsored materials featuring logos and brand names are found in classes, how many companies visit/operate in your school.
- Discuss this issue in your school – do people want commercial schemes in the school? Are they aware of the Campaign for Commercial-Free Education and the international movement against advertising and marketing in schools? (See No Logo by Naomi Klein or Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser)
- Print one of the Commercial Scheme Evaluations (e.g. Tesco, SuperValu) from this website and display it on school notice boards.
- Identify the schemes which are unacceptable and take a stand. Inform people why you are not participating and seek non-commercial alternatives.
- Formulate an agreed school policy to reduce the level of advertising students are exposed to and reinforce the educational mission of the school. Examine the Campaign for Commercial-Free Education’s Template Policy.
You may wish to consult international guidelines.
- Contact your Patron Body and the Department of Education and Science to request they develop effective guidelines to prevent commercial exploitation and support schools who wish seek a commercial-free environment.
